distrowatch.com — Linus: I think multiple distributions aren't just a good thing, I think it's something absolutely required! We have hundreds of distros, and a lot of them are really for niche markets. And you need that - simply because different markets simply have different requirements, and no single distro will take care of them all.

None of the Big three BSD's have micro-kernels!

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. But, I think, you can choose to not install different components of Windows. Say I bought Ultimate; I can still choose not to install Remote Host or Aero or something, right? I'm not sure, I haven't installed Vista in a while.

@srg13Everyone who has a computer and wants the os to run well has to spend a pile of time customizing it, or looking for specific distros/components.Like netbooks: gOS is awesome for msi netbooks and is a nice OS, but try to install it on a eee 901, and it will be horrible. So instead you go get easypeasy, which does eee901, and you lose some of the usability of gOS.And they are both Ubuntu.I would love to see a repository management system which would find packages meant specifically for your hardware, then give you the option of installing them. Rather than hunting for solutions in forums only to find you are going to have to terminal the whole thing, or install from random debs/repos just to get something like fan control/hotkey support.
