phillryu.com — As an icon artist, it's always interesting hearing about how other artists work. This one is pretty interesting, about Adam Betts creating the now iconic Adium duck. Plus, he promises new icons soon! Hopefully that won't ruffle too many feathers!

I hate, HATE the Adium duck. It's an epidemic of OSS projects that they think their cheesy humor is funny or cute. Every time I install Adium on any Mac, the absolute first thing I do is replace that stupid, idiotic duck and its quacking sounds.

Yes, it's a profession for some. Take Mike Matas (who is now working for Apple) http://www.mikematas.com

I don't like that duck. Nothing against the duck personally, I'm just not fond of mascots.

I like the duck, especially the Yoda version of the duck (Leia Duck), he has the ears and a green light-sabre he waves around when you get a message.

Perhaps as a testament for the icon, my co-worker came by to chat with me during work, and saw my icon jumping. She immediately wanted to know how she can get the application installed on her windows machine, before me telling her what the application was. ;)

I still think it's ugly.

It's very rare that I see a blog who's design makes me go "Damn, this guy knows what he's doing."Now if only there was some sort of test that people had to pass in order to customize the layout of their MySpace page...

Icons are important when designing any kind of software. They're supposed to be, well, iconic. They are supposed to make your product easily identifiable.

@mark1372 I couldn't agree more. The application is awesome, but the duck... just a little too childish. So it's a good thing they make it so easy to change. ;)
