lifehacker.com — Being digital vagabonds without an Exchange server, we Lifehacker writers use online apps like Gmail and Google Calendar to get things done. But can an Outlook user make the switch without losing out? Guest contributor Jared Goralnick's here today to take a look.

The only thing that's the clear winner for me is seach. A gmail search across my 3GB of emails take seconds. How long would that take you with Outlook?

Outlook Express (or whatever they call it now) v. Thunderbird

I can't believe gmail still doesn't show the size of a message (i.e. email + attachment(s) file size) as an optional column. That would really help me identify messages taking up too much space that I can delete. I know there is plenty of space offered, but I am a stickler for not keeping that 10mb attachment someone sent me in 2004 buried in thousands of emails.

Don't know about you, but I'd rather see ads which I may be interested in.Then again, you don't really _need_ to see the ads -> Firefox + Adblock Plus.

Ahem, what's keeping you GMail admin from reading your email? Most business accounts set up in GMail have a sysadmin with full access to all mailboxes too. So unless you go totally outside your company's email structure, it really is apples to apples. The difference from a business user's perspective is that Google also has full access and total control over your account. And being web based, it's easier for competitors and others to hack/bribe/social engineer their way into your account also. You really have no idea how your email may be used or where/whose hands it may end up in.

You probably have problems with other apps, too, because you foolishly put things on your machine without knowing what you're doing. Hundreds of millions of other people seem to be able to run Office just fine. Why can't you?
