lifehacker.com — Windows only: Texter is a system tray application that saves you countless keystrokes by replacing user-defined snippets of text with your commonly used text phrases. In addition to basic text replacement, Texter allows you to set return-to markers for your cursor and insert clipboard contents into your replacement text

You're damn right. Tell that to my dad, who is one big crippled billboard.

Actually, Texter is written using AutoHotkey. If you need more than what Texter offers, AHK is an excellent solution.

Hey karlrove1, when I first saw the BBC 9/11 video w/ Jane Stanley or whatever, I thought it was amazing... but then I realized it was the anchorman who said Salomon brothers (WTC7) first. Jane had mentioned earlier that the Marriott hotel had also collapsed, and the anchorman must have misinterpreted that as the Salomon brothers building, but Jane probably should have corrected him. I now think it was just a miscommunication, an error on the part of the anchorman. If you notice, the text follows his mention of the Salomon brothers building and talking about if people got out safely.

It looks like this is free, flashpaste costs $30. That's the difference.

I'll check this out -- at work, I have to use a Dell/Win XP box.... at home a MacBook..... Mac users have had apps like TypeIt4me and Textexpander to do this type of thing..... what i REALLY want, is something for Win like QuickSilver.

Attempt to make friendly and easy user interface for power AutoHotkey system is genial! But... I have downloaded and installed it... so many bugs.. some of keys on keyboard don't work when texter is running. Explorer has crashed after second attempt to replace text:( Also bug with pasting text to IE address bar. It pastes well, I know.. but try to paste any text from texter to other window after IE address bar...;(I think I can't use it, so I have uninstalled it.

It is amazing how much time you can save by using this tool. I work at a support center where you have to repeat yourself over and over and this tool has made my life so much easier! THANK YOU!

This is the best thing that ever existed. At first I liked it a lot, and we all set it up on our computers at work. Now, I have come to depend on it and the day I thought I had lost all my texter strings I was crying. I work at a technical support center and this awesome tool has improved my ticket rate by a 60%. THANK YOU LIFE HACKER!

Ditto is amazing and also allows one to use hotstring text replacement. At the most basic level it can probably do what texter does but it appears as if texter makes it a bit easier to use it for text replacement task and to manage the list of replacements.

i love it . changed my way of working on pc - can we customize some special commands as the date ones ? I'd like a shortcut to paste date in format YYYYDDMM for my files .. seems like those commands cant handle it .. thanksFabio * %ds: Short date, which will return the date in the following format: 3/9/2007. * %dl: Long date, which returns the date in the following format: Friday, March 09, 2007. * %t: Time, which returns the time as follows: 1:30 PM.
