Any competent sysadmin would lock out booting from an external device if they wanted to secure a computer, but it seems to rarely happen that way.

Actually, if I copied it back onto his new drive, I could be liable for distributing child porn in a legal sense. That is why he got what he got. We also kept the original failing drive.
