@ xilon: {Most of these don't run on JUST GNU/Linux, and they're definitely not "Ubuntu applications". They are *nix applications (most run under *BSD etc as well)...Marked as inaccurate.}RTFA: "While Ubuntu comes jacked with useful applications out of the box, there's a big selection of free, thriving Linux desktop software which matches or betters their Windows and Mac counterparts in terms of features..."Of course these are Ubuntu applications. They are APPLICATIONS that run on UBUNTU! There are counterparts on other OS, but these programs are Free and Linux based. For those of us who use Ubuntu, this is a great list of applications to try out.
gparted is basically a gtk front-end for the parted program. I personally prefer qparted (parted with a qt front-end), it just seems to function better for me.
I said available OOTB. Which means installed OOTB. We need a bit of work to make the apps more cross-environment compatible.IIRC, the KDE libraries are only loaded once (same with GNOME libraries). If we were to make a standard that we can change the settings of the preferences, it would be good. For example, if one runs a KDE app inside GNOME, the settings menu gets removed and "Configure $appname" gets moved to Edit->Preferences. If we make semiunified themes, it wouldn't be a problem. That said, for those coming from Windows/Mac, the apps are so different in their interfaces, a difference between KDE and GNOME would go unnoticed.
most of them run pretty well on other OS like FreeBSD, Kopete, Amarok, Katapult are kde apps and kde works on freebsd, gmailchecker is a gnome applet so it runs wherever gnome runs. Not to say that samba exists since before some of the ubuntu users were born.
these ARE "Ubuntu applications" in that they are all in the Ubuntu repos. Not all Linux applications are in Ubuntu's repos, so if you're an Ubuntu user, specifically, this list might be helpful. However, it frustrates me when gnome and kde applications are mixed together like that... For example, an Ubuntu user might have a much easier time with Rhythmbox instead of Amarok. (I'm a Kubuntu user, so Amarok for me!)

...except for Automatix. It's an Ubuntu/Mepis-only app, and Mepis is based on Ubuntu.
