janellen.blogspot.com — Joliet, Montana Librarian ordered "The Last Jihad" and "The Ezekial Option" for patrons, only to receive a notice that she was now placed on an FBI watch list with due respect for concerns with the requirements of the Patriot Act. Librarian will have to appear in court before she is allowed to order more books.

1) In the interest of full disclosure: I am married to Jane Ellen+2) She is ill right now with a *very* nasty sinus headache and has gone to bed to get some sleep3) She is NOT making this up. She has spoken to the person in question and has seen the letter in question. For further clarification, please go to her blog and read her most recent entry.4) Please get your facts straight before clicking on the "Submit" button. I am sure that it was just an overzealous reading of the original post, but the librarian does not have to go to court. My understanding is that she has to go the main library in Billings and talk to somebody about something. Kind of stupid if you ask me, but they didn't ask me.5) If your mother hasn't mentioned it before, "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all." At least be civil, even if you don't believe the story. State your case and your concerns, not your lack of vocabulary.6) For those who would like some corroboration of the existence of the letter - it is a relevant and reasonable request on your part. However, that is for the librarian in question to decide. It is her call.7) As for the ALA not being aware of this situation: Joliet is a very small town (512 +/-) and this only happened yesterday. Maybe someone with ties to the ALA would like to advise them of the brouhaha?8) And, to paraphrase Dave Barry, "She is not making this up!" She is surprised at all of this attention, as she has never pretended to be a journalist - just a priest blogging about her experiences. Don't read in to it more than is really there.THX!

If she can get a copy of the letter, then please have her do so. If not, then see if she can find out who sent it and as much detail as possible about what it said. In short, as much detail as possible. I'll watch her blog in the next few days.As for ALA, I would guess this librarian is a member and knows how to contact them, but if she isn't, then she should know that they can still be of great help to her. In fact, the ALA midwinter conference is about to take place in Seattle, and I have absolutely no doubt that something like this would be of interest there. And if this librarian doesn't want to push this very hard on her own, but if she still wants it to be seen by the right people, just tell your wife to get that scan, get it posted, and I guarantee you it will, without a doubt, get noticed. If she'd like it to be done out of sight of the Internet community at large, well, that might also be arranged.I'll be watching this thread for updates.
