consumeraffairs.com — In September '07, I left work on the advice of my doctor. I have a number of illnesses which require multiple treatments with multiple specialists and medications. The original request for short term disability was denied. I was fired after FMLA ended and in spite of support of 3 doctors, the appeal was denied. Now losing everything to creditors.

I'm a diabetic with a congenital heart block that requires a pacemaker. I have obstructive sleep apena with restless leg syndrome which have led to chronic fatigue. I have a bloodclotting disorder which prohibits long term sedentary situations, such as sitting all day at a desk. I have carpal tunnel syndrome which is complicated by diabetic neuropathy. The neuropathy also affects my legs and feet. I have so little feeling in my hands that I have burned my fingers (blistered) without realizing it. I have exercise-induced asthma which is exacerbated by extended periods of talking, such as during phone conversations required of a call center representative. I have been through two cancer diagnoses in 4 years, and likely face additional ones due to a predisposition to the disease. In spite of all of this, and recommendations from a Nurse Practitioner, Hematologist, Endocrinologist, and Geneticist, all of whom site the comorbidities of my various issues, Liberty Mutual has denied to award me with the short and long term disability payments I was entitled to from my previous employer for whom I'd worked for nearly 13 years! As a result, my family is losing everything we've worked for. My income was the higher of the two between my husband and I, so the loss is having a huge impact. We are having to declare bankruptcy. We'll be losing our house and our boat. It is also possible that we'll lose our vehicles as the bank that holds their loans has a collateral clause which makes them collateral for any other debt we might have with them and we have a credit card with a large balance, driven up because of using it to compensate for my lack of income. To top it all off, we have a 10 year old son who has Aspberger's Disorder, which is an Autism Spectrum Disorder. He does not do well with change, yet we have to move, he has to change schools, and we may not be able to take all of his pets (3 cats and 2 dogs) with us to the rented location. He's advised that he is going to ask Santa for enough money to pay everything off so that we can keep our home and pets, but little does he realize that there may not be a Christmas for us this year.
