Apparently the common digger doesn't understand the concept of a union. Either the entire union ratifies a contract, or individual groups start to dismantle the union.
One could also argue that Letterman's deal will put pressure on other groups to make deals as well. Currently, he's the only intact show in town. Everyone else is by definition second best.

Unions exist ONLY to make money. They create an adversarial system to further thier own monetary gains. Sufficient laws exist to protect workers. If lack of pay is an issue, the market will work it out.
