cyberlaw.stanford.edu— Leo in his speech at the PODCAST Expo 2006 has suggested podcastors change the name from "PODCAST" to "NETCAST" in beliefs this is a more accurate name than Podcasting.

apple has to go after people using pod-terms in order to protect the distinctiveness of the ipod trademark. otherwise you end up with a generic name that anyone will be able to use - ex. thermos. its a legal thing. that said, netcast is dumb
And what do you use to play music instead of iTunes? Windows Media Player? As if there wasn't a MORE bloated program than WMP. And Winamp has become nothing but an extension of AOL ever since they were bought.
"And what do you use to play music instead of iTunes? Windows Media Player?"WinAmp?"Winamp has become nothing but an extension of AOL ever since they were bought."Eh? Sure they don't add anything in the new updates, just fix security flaws but who cares? Still plays your music in your playlist..."As if there wasn't a MORE bloated program than WMP."RealPlayer? btw iTunes is hella bloatware, 35mb installer vs WMP's 24mb vs Realplayer's 10mb vs Winamp's 6mb... Easy to see who wins bloatware status size wize. RealPlayer is probably the most bloated player overall though. Personally I use iTunes but I still like Winamp, beats the other 2 players.
You have to give Apple credit for encapsulating the concept, although it does monopolize the market around Apple products. Now is a good time to decouple the audio blogging subculture from Apple branding. Creative and the 5 years of mp3 devices as well as Microsoft's Zune product entry will be healthy additions to the market if only to put Apple on their toes.I own a Video IPOD and I DONT LOVE IT. But, I use it, only because their has been limited competition (total solutions to receiving daily audio and video blogs).PODCAST is a misnomer. First, you can play these files on other devices not just an ipod. Second, it's not a broadcast! At all! It's more a subscription and more similar to email than it is to broadcasts.

Itunes still has the lock on RSS audio feeds. They will continue to call it podcast. You will download twit in the podcast section of Itunes.

Podcast sounds stupid too, but people use it anyway.

NETCAST !!

I think the whole NetCast idea is good but I doubt it will come into common usage. At least the common man relates to the term pod -> Ipod -> something to listen to from the Internet. NetCast could mean anything!Check out my article on how easy it is to podcast with the new cyn.in service, here: http://www.digg.com/software/Podcast_in_3_easy_steps
