I concur. It doesn't make sense that the dock would be there to get in the way of trying to click on the rest of the interface. Of course if this was real, i'd be all over it.
an example of how a track pad with a screen built into it could be useful :you're watching a full screen movie, and, instead of moving a mouse icon over the " play / pause / movie timeline " controls on the same screen, you could use your trackpad as a touch screen, and have the ability to "scrub" through the movie, or pause, or whatever.
