ubuntuforums.org— If you run Ubuntu be very weary in applying the latest xserver-xorg-core update. It can bring your machine to an abrupt halt. There is a fix suggested in the forums.

I'm quite used to this sort of thing, having run Debian unstable for many years (every now and then a package upgrade would break something). This is the sort of thing I switched to Ubuntu to avoid. But it didn't really bother me when it happened to me this morning as it was only the X server. I just assumed they'd have it fixed in a few hours and sure enough when I SSH'd in from work and checked there was a new package available. Much faster at fixing things that Debian unstable generally was.I've seen supposedly stable distros have updates that mess up things that prevented booting up. That REALLY sucks. Especially when you're not physically there to be able to put in a boot CD and fix it. This is bad, but not nearly as bad as that. Sucks for the noobs, though.
This patch broke my Laptop real good yesterday so I'm installing SLED as I type. I just got the automatix XGL script and 3D desktop on my gaming box so I'm glad I didn't update my desktop yesterday and break it.I wanted to play with SLED anyways so now I can. I hose my laptop every couple months so it's no big deal...it's just a toy anyway, all the gaming gets done on the desktop anyway.
@bigtrouble: That only works if distupgrade finds a match. If you are using Dapper and are already up to date on everything, it won't help at all. (I know, 'cause I tried it last night)

Tseliot (a fellow mod) created a sticky here :<a class="user" href="http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=241254">http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=241254</a>Tseliot also sent an email to the chief of the team which maintains the Xserver.I blogged about this here :<a class="user" href="http://ubuntudemon.wordpress.com/2006/08/22/latest-dapper-xserver-xorg-upgrade-might-break-the-xserver/">http://ubuntudemon.wordpress.com/2006/08/22/latest-dapper-xserver-xorg-upgrade-might-break-the-xserver/</a>My blog is also going to planet.ubuntu.com. So some Ubuntu developers read my blog.I'm sure this will be fixed soon. I hope a lot of people read about this fix before they waste their time and get frustrated.

How about when you change your motherboard and Windows Bluescreens every reboot?
