defectivebydesign.org — Over the weekend, under the deceptive banner of "intellectual property", the RIAA Enforcement Bill passed with several unacceptable provisions. We have one more chance to stop this bill from becoming law. Bush has yet to sign it. Given the fact that the DoJ publicly objected to it earlier, Bush may veto it. But we can't count on that - Take action!

It can wait till what? On that line of thought it will never be addressed because there'll always be something bigger. twobit's got a point. if you don't think it's important enough to defend now and let them have one victory, what's to say people in the future are suddenly going to start caring and prevent it from happening again. After many "happening agains" you've lost a lot of ground. In perspective, original copyrighted works were only in place for 14 years before being released to the public domain. Now they're a lifetime in length. Copyright's not there for the artist (or rather the labels, the labels are ripping off the artists too) to rule the land with an iron fist. It's there to provide a compromise between the freedom of the artist to make some money and the freedom of its listeners to build off of it and enrich their lives and culture. Imagine if Rap music were to be slapped with a fish into oblivion for using sampling in it's infancy... it and all the genres influenced by it would have been very different. The RIAA's removed the compromise out of copyright and turned it into a means to spy on their paying customers in the last 20 years. Defend what ground you have now. Once you give up your rights you never know when you 'll get them back.
