nature.org — The Nature Conservancy has brokered the largest debt-for-nature swap in history -- a deal that will secure long-term, science-based conservation for Costa Rica's tropical forests. $12.6 million in debt will be forgiven and $26 million will be provided to finance forest conservation over the next 16 years.

At last, some good, tangible news about the environment!

In some ways Costa Rica leaves the "civilized" world for dead. Almost all of their electricity is from renewable sources and they disbanded their armed forces 60 years ago and put the money into more worthwhile efforts.Unfortunately even though they have a genuine care for their environment the people still trash the place, anywhere you go except for the expat zones you will see a stupid amount of litter all over the place. It's still an incredible little country though. : )

swicklund has a fair point, actually, based on common practice in Central America; Costa Rica is, as you've stated, exceptional in many ways. In Honduras, the forestry service, COHDEFOR, works hard to maintain control of logging practices that, at least in the instance I saw in Olancho, are encroaching on protected land. This is true near Gualaco in Sierra de Agalta, and likely in other parks as well (I've only visited Agalta and La Tigra).

The land is used for eco-tourism as well as agriculture.

A wonderful idea. We need to work no to save what's left of the virgin areas in the third world lest there be nothing left for the children of the future. Investment in real estate in countries like Costa Rica will help save what is left. http://www.fishcr.net
