You can blame American stupidity and be accurate, but lets apportion the short-sightedness correctly. The Superconducting Super Collider was canceled by the Democrat-controlled Congress in '92. The Republican Revolution/Contract with America/etc... didn't give the Republicans control of congress until 1995. While President Clinton supported the SSC, revenue bills originate in Congress, so the blame lies there. I'm guessing that as a Texan, George W. Bush would have loved having 12 billion dollars spent in his state. So the cancellation has nothing to do with Jesus, religion, or the war in Iraq. It has more to do with Congress deciding to save some money by canceling a project that had ballooned in cost from 4 billion to over 12 billion.
They're not trying to create black holes. My Natural Science prof will be on the progject at the end of may and she scoffed at the notion of micro black holes. What they are trying to accomplish is to understand the fundamentals of how the universe started, and try to find the common ground between energy and matter.
