msnbc.msn.com— Next time you screw in a cheap incandescent light bulb, ask yourself this: Do you ride a horse to work? Still churning your own butter?

I just use one of those mini-spiral floresent lightbulbs in my desklight and room. All the light of a 60W bulb and it just uses 13W and lasts a lot longer. A tad expensive (around CAD$12 per bulb), but the logevity and minimal voltage saves you a bundle in the long-run.A bunch of traffic lights around town use LED clusters... super bright.
I use mini spirals everywhere in my house. The price has come down a lot really. Check walmart and various home stores. I usually get a pack of 3 for 6 bucks. It seems expensive considering you can get a pack of like 4 old ones for 99 cents, but if you're paying electricity bills, the savings will show up there and well worth it. Some tips for the mini spirals, get the ones that says "instant on". The cheaper ones will flicker a bit and lag before turning on. Those are crap.
come on .... if the prices were down just a BIT more, like ...$15-20/bulb then I'd replace every single one I have (not a ton). I'm sick of incandesent (sp) ones dying. Plus LED's look cool :)
>>> build your own LED bulbs :) www.besthongkong.comYay! Everybody loves playing 120v/240v AC mains power! If you want to kill yourself over a lightbulb, be my guest. But I warn you, 24 $1 LEDs + a 120/240V transformer cost about the same amount as buying the whole package.
I have been replacing all burned out bulbs in my house for the past 5 or 6 years with CFL's, so now I am almost at 100% CFL usage in the house. When they start to burn out and need replaced in a few years, hopefully the LED technology will be cheap enough to swap out the CFL's. There are a few places where you cannot use CFL's though, like on an electronic dimmer (old dimmers work with "dimmable" CFL's, but save no electricity when dimmed, due to the dimmer eating up the unused wattage). I wonder if the LED bulb has the same limitation?
yeah those are the same bulbs. any coast to coast listener that has delt wit ccrane knows that they just buy cheap stuff from japan make comercials that make it sound like no one else has it, and not to mention they sale it for 5x as much allot of the time. the only people ccrane get buisness from are the gulable that dont compair prices
when are they going to make CFLs or LED bulbs in a 3-way configuration? i love 3-way bulbs. a 45-watt equivalent bulb is good for little more than preventing you from bumping into stuff or maybe to light a path outside. Hardly useful for indoors though. how bright are those 1.3 watt bulbs adv'd at geeks.com. the ad doesn't say.
My company has been doing this for years with Fountains... Never once has the thought crossed my mind that this would be awesome in other applications. I'll digg... and remain poor.
LEDs are pretty good for Low level light and accents lights and some flashlights. In fact I prefer them. Still needs work to become main source of light. I use LED lights now for Red tower light beacons. But they are not bright enough to be used for daytime strobes. They are expensive but they last forever and decrease tower loading.
For those who want to DIY remember that LEDs need to use a resistor. For example, for a blue LED and a 12VDC battery you have to use a resistor of aproximatelly 470 ohm. The resistor values depends on the kind and color of the LEDs and the power source voltage. Here you can find an easy software that calculates the resistor value as well as the power consumption for different LED configurations: http://www.ledsinternational.com/downloads.htm

I've currently replaced all my bulbs with GE Edison and Reveal Bulbs and Philips Natural Light Bulb.Edison being the highest quality. They throw off light like no other. The spiral CFL's last longer but the cheap ones throw off horrid light. I couldnt take it anymore. Ugly lighting all over the place. Heres a picture of a 40watt Reveal Bulb and a standard incandesant. The Reveal is on the right.http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b227/IIRuffyII/Computers/WorkstationRuffy.jpg
