howtoforge.com — "I am writing this as a partial documentation of my trials and tribulations with hopes of aiding all Linux noobs on the steps necessary to create a basic Linux, Apache2, MySQl5 and PhP5 system with FTP. Again, this document is tailored to complete Linux beginners and is in no way a complete guide to attacking such a setup"

"something stupid i noticed"Written by Chris L. Fay on 7/15/2006" yet all the screenshots show July 26th."I added them later.....Figured it might help to clarify some of the things I was trying to portray. Thanks for the criticism on this article; again I was not trying to do an in depth piece including "everything" you would need. My intent was to help someone new to Linux, like myself, get through some of the confusion on things sometimes taken for granted by more advanced users. I agree with those who criticize it for using a GUI for the server environment but, some of us just aren't skilled enough with the command prompt and would still like to run a web server as we learn. Webmin is a great tool with some really user friendly and effective options that I find very helpful. I did note the command error "li" instead of "dir" and updated it on the article within my site. If you have any ideas for improvement feel free to email me as well.Chris Fay

@deter1iiWell, I don't know which forum you were on, but on behalf of the well-mannered GNU/Linux community, let me apologize for the treatment you received.Generally, I point others to forums that I already participate on and can vouch for when they are looking for advice, help, or a HOWTO, as that way I can be assured that their experience will be beneficial and rewarding. I never, ever refer anyone to the IRC channels. While there may be some very helpful community there, my experience with IRC as a whole (not in just dealing with OSS, but on a myriad of topics as well) left me thinking that it was an environment setup for for the explicit purpose of flame wars and ad hominem attacks. Again, let me repeat that I'm generalizing, and there probably is a very helpful community somewhere there, but I don't want to unleash one of my friends or clients (or acquaintance) into that kind of enviroment.Inaeth"Faith (n): Belief without evidence in one who preaches without knowledge about things without parallel." -Ambrose Bierce
