first of all that video is a trick, they edited that guy into this movie http://www.cineforcefilms.com/ about kiteboarding. admirabumblebee is right that those things happen, but its very very rare to hit suck a strong upcurrent. I mean think about it, if it happened a lot would there be a lot of dead kiteboarders?
no. The way those kites are made is that you have to have a sizable weight holding onto the strings or else it stalls out - prevents you from losing the kite if you let go
I am a hard core windsurfer ( and an Instructor at Windsure... Windsurfing school in vancouver BC canada) and tried kiting ... here is my 2 cents worth... Kiting is a Extremly dangerous sport to yourself and others...WAY MORE than Windsufing ... And here is why...1) u can fly high ..really high and fall 2) your lines at speed kiters and windsurfers travel at become razor blades ( i started to carry a knife in my harness when windsuring...for kiting lines getting tangled) 3) If u are begining or become out of control...you become a really deadly thing... i know ppl that got hit .. i myself hit a kiteboard that some kiter lost and got catapulted at ... 30 knots-ish into my sail/ mast ... 4) if u arent really good then landing safely at a beach is nearly impossible for kiters ( u usually need 1-2 ppl catching the kite ) and become a real pain for the ppl at the beach as ur kite/ lines can hit anyone there

You know, at that point, I would no longer call that surfing. That is parachuting.

Because the strong gust would have taken him another 20m up by the time he released it, so a painful landing and losing your ?800 kite!
