ultimatebootcd.com — This is always my first step when I cant tell wich piece of hardware is screwing me over. It has just about every tool you need to get back up and running on one bootable CD. A must have for any computer user.

Knoppix is very helpful, but doesn't have much in the way of diagnostics aside from memtest at the boot prompt.Hiren's boot cd looks useful, but you usually won't find it anywhere other than eDonkey and bittorrent as it's comPLETELY illegal.
