life.com — Hurricane Katrina, a huge category 4 storm, made landfall in the continental U.S. on August 29, 2005, on the Gulf Coast with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. Louisiana and Mississippi took the brunt of the impact. The monster would prove to be among the deadliest natural disasters in United States history with more than 1,800 confirmed dead.

We knew, most people had power back and Wilma was a much worse storm. Difference is our buildings are meant to withstand hurricanes. NO was just sitting in a bowl next to the shallow Gulf with nothing built to withstand a hurricane. People have known for a long time what would happen there if a strong enough hurricane struck and the government did nothing.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good sensationalistic ribbing of the President!

The only explanation I can give for the attitude of a lot of the New Orleans Katrina victims that you speak of is that it is a city that has had generational poverty perpetrated upon it by the federal government. It's as if the leaders of New Orleans didn't want the people there to pick themselves up by the bootstraps and improve their own lives because if they did that then the city would loose federal funding because as I understand the system, the amount of funding your area receives is based upon the number of people that you have living in poverty. That is a discussion that needs to take place. Cities need to be rewarded for getting people out of poverty instead of being financially rewarded for keeping people down. Why do you think the educational system is so bad there? If the people get an education, they won't need to be in they system anymore, and if enough people get off the system, then the city will loose that federal funding. It is very sad because there is such a waste of human contribution in such a system--it automatically assumes that the city is better off getting federal money that it can readily see without seeing that it will get so much more through taxes if the citizens are properly educated and get well paying jobs. Some people say it is cultural, I disagree. No culture really wants to be enslaved. It is institutionalized poverty. I guess another word for it is socialism, any system where the government wants to keep you dependent on it and convinces you that all the cards are stacked against you and your only hope is by taking those government hand outs is in fact socialism.

You're awesome! I'm glad to hear that you got through that. Here in Dallas, all we have to worry about are tornadoes wiping us out. I've got insurance, and a good job so I know I would make it through OK. I don't need the government to bail me out, or provide me with a place to live. People who rely on government programs have themselves to blame when they're displaced because of a disaster, and have no place else to go.

"Moral of the story: never, never rely on the government to save your life. "Correction: never, never rely on Republicans to save your life.

To everyone that shows no sympathy for the victims of Katrina; I only hope that one day you are stuck in such a hell with nowhere to turn for help. Surely you will be able to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" then.
