Not only software should be understandable but you also need the hardware to get to the software. I have an 8 inch floppy disk lying around here but no means to read its content.

Well there are holographic disks which are like floppy disks but hold more than blu-ray, so cartridges will probably come back. And with solid state hard drives on the rise and flash drives the speed and capacity of flash will probably over come that of disks, so in the end cartridges will rule, because Cd's just wont't spin fast enough to match the transfer speed.
