arstechnica.com — If a song has been downloaded from a torrent site 17,000 times, it doesn't necessarily equal 17,000 lost sales, according to US District Judge James P. Jones. The judge recently ruled against using this kind of reasoning in determining restitution in a criminal copyright case, though it doesn't necessarily affect civil cases against downloaders.

i pirate most of my music, i still buy a CD at every show i go to, but i dont justify what im doing. Pirating muisic/movies/software/games or whatever isnt a good thing. Everyone always says "well i wouldnt of purchased it anyway" well that doesnt mean you get to use it. You dont need to try 2 new games a week. I pirate my music and movies but i know what im doing is wrong i still do it because my music tastes wouldn't be as varied and i wouldnt see all the new awesome movies i can now. So pirate all you want but stop trying to justify it.

@ crazyhorse13"Now, let's say I buy the book, but then I steal a few more for my friends because I haven't finished it yet. I do this under the logic that they will get to read it anyways once I'm done with it. This is obviously a crime, because my theft of those books prevents their legitimate sale."This is not analogous. More appropriate would be if you photocopied the book for your friends because you weren't finished with it.
