torrentfreak.com — They are quite rare events but on occasion, artists actually encourage fans to share their music online. Singer Joss Stone has no problem doing so at all. In fact, after a recent concert in Argentina she said that piracy is "brilliant".

You've never heard of her? She's one of the best friggin blue-eyed soul singers on the planet. And unlike Amy Winehouse, she's easy on the eyes. :)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_stone

spetznatz,I hear everything you are saying and I agree with a lot of it, but consider this... You say: "1. discover lesser known artists 2. expand my musical taste 3. as a result go to an increasing number of shows.. a business model where the artists actually DO see their fair share of money."Well, I just spoke to a guy I know that came off a tour and you may be interested in some facts about the bands finances. They did 16 cities in about as many days. They had large audiences in every club/venue, they actually saved up money from their regular jobs in order to be able to afford to go on tour. They slept rough every night, meaning that someone from the audience always let them crash with them. (take that as an indication as to how popular they must be) They sold out of their self produced CDs on the tour. They didn't stay at any hotels, eat anywhere expensive, basically it was your classic promotional tour for a popular band trying to expand a bit... just like its always been.So when I ask him how much they made because according to the "new wisdom" they should be rolling in it by now from gigging, as popular as they are... Well as you may have guessed thats not what happened. At first he said they broke even then after discussing it a bit he admitted they had lost money and once you factored in the time away from their day jobs it was actually a pretty big hole they would be digging out of for a while.Keep in mind this is a popular band, able to book a 16 city tour. The whole "bands make money from playing shows thing only starts happening at a certain level and you may be surprised at just how high that level is. Until that happens, making music gets increasingly expensive and time consuming for independents, its hard to keep it going when it doesn't produce much income. So, I understand that you don't want to give the record companies any more money. Hell! I agree, but nothing is preventing people from seeking out and directly supporting many true independents right now. In fact there was nothing stopping people a decade ago either. Independent music at a reasonable price or even free of license is nothing new. Perhaps you personally are different. But I am afraid you are rare. Most are just satisfied to follow the marketing and listen/buy/pirate what they are told instructed to buy/pirate. In the long run, I fear this will all end up changing nothing except making the record companies stronger once they get a handle on it. They WILL eventually find a way to exploit it and it will be their excuse to limit choice and variety even more than it already is.They are that evil... They started their buccaneering careers a long time ago, and although they have been fat and lazy for many years... they are sharpening their swords and polishing their hooks. When they are ready, They will "change" and be something "new" and you will never know just how screwed you are... at least for another 20-30 years. The only way to stop them is to stop drinking the poison. Thanks for letting me rant there... : )

Since I gave up illegal music downloading several years ago, that explains my experience.Oh and how often do you find the music you want in FLAC vs MP3?

They did "back then" also. And most of them were crap.
