Gotta love the vague "Fear & Loathing" references.

mikeymooseJun 29, 2010
Yes, it's the animat-iest! Using only the very latest of animatorialistic film techniques!
xk3tJun 30, 2010
What gave it away?
davidtcJun 29, 2010
Jonny Deep always wears a s**t ton of make-up to get ready for his characters. Wonder how long it took to get him ready to film for this one each day.
marshalbananaJun 29, 2010
Johnny Depp's Rango trailer? He has barely anything to do with it (especially the trailer) when you take into account the animators, modelers, lighters, designers etc. It's time to give more credit to artists who make these movies instead of ONLY the actors. Yes, I know they get credits at the end of the movie, but come on. Probably nobody outside animation knows who Glen Keane is, but he's a great animator responsible for amazingly animated Disney characters such as Tarzan and Aladdin. That guy's name should be at the top of a poster. Not f**king some dude who phones in his lines and doesn't care as much.
/animator rant
mikeymooseJun 29, 2010
Understood, but honestly... OK, wait - do I have to expl... no. You know what sells movie stubs...
razorguyJun 29, 2010
Glen Keane: The guy who created amazingly animated Disney characters such as Tarzan and Aladdin
presents
RANGO!
Bit too wordy since you got to explain who the guy is. The point being...its marketing.
I agree to a point but look, they got into the business to do what they like and if they need their name in lights to make them feel better about their choice of work, then they are in the wrong business. Those in the know will appreciate their work regardless if they painted a background, made a character, or created the fart sound effect.
kinseyincanadaJun 29, 2010
cause no ones going to go see a movie because Glen Keane is in it people will go see a movie just because Jonny Depp is in it.
davidtcJun 29, 2010
Agree with you up until the "Not f**king some dude who phones in his lines and doesn't care as much". The people who do the voices spend lots of time to get to know the characters and the work they do creates the characters beyond what just animation does. You do realize that a big part of the animation is based on the lines the voice actors/actresses give right? The voices are done before the talking animation and animation is based on the lines.
Have fun watch any movie with the sound off or the voices no where near being synced together.
marshalbananaJun 29, 2010
No, I understand. The voices can be a big part of it, but as somebody who is an animator and does work with voice actors' work, sometimes it's totally half-assed.
Anyway the point is that we should get away from thinking it's only the voice actors work which makes the movie good and also recognize there are other stars. I don't really care that much though, I just felt like ranting.
thenepentheJun 29, 2010
In '05 before Corpse Bride or whatever the hell that was came out, I did a survey thing in Texas where I had to watch the trailer and then answer questions about what would make me want to watch the movie. Well, the guy hated his job and just answered everything for me, and so I watched in horror as he entered in my "opinion" being: "I want to see this movie because of Johnny Depp" I was actually interested in it but not because of Johnny Depp. (I love him as an actor; he's in great movies, but he'll never be the REASON to see something) So just multiply that by a thousand and one, and that's probably how they end up hyping the f**king actors, not the animation.
cathicksJun 30, 2010
I digg this statement.
-A Pixarian
thenikJun 30, 2010
So you work for Pixar or you just like Pixar movies? Either way - right on, bro, and if it's the former: You kick so much ass.
crayonno9Jun 30, 2010
@TheNik - subtle hint...Pixar is in Emeryville.
eifersucht12aJun 30, 2010
All sounds great (in theory) and I agree but I have to say Johnny Depp generally is not an actor/talent to claim "phones in" his lines. He's pretty damn good at what he does.
neonoodleJun 30, 2010
As a person who's working on this movie, I don't care as long as it gets the asses in the seats.

I may get dugg down for this, but this one might actually be good in 3D, especially considering the condition I'll be in when I see it. Perhaps I wont even need glasses.

Johnny Depp is the master of playing the same role in every movie. He has no real depth and no real range, but he knows how to play the same part over and over again. He is good at playing an eccentric weirdo. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
YOU'RE INSANE.
He's the very epitome of range. Tell me, how similar was his character in Edward Scissorhands to his character in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?
His character in Dead Man?
Ed Wood?
kolop1Jun 30, 2010
Yeah, they are all pretty much the same character. Eccentric and kind of girly.
diggeradoJun 30, 2010
You are insane. It's still an enormous range from the Legend of Sleepy Hollow's nervous stuttering scientist to Pirates brazen captain even if they both technically fit the description of eccentric and girly.
kolop1Jun 30, 2010
Look I like Depp. I think he is a good actor. He knows how to play that one part he plays perfectly.

Anyone else surprised to see the Nickelodeon Movies tag line at the end?
That did not look like a Nickelodeon movie.
malbertsenJun 30, 2010
I think with the success of Yo Gabba Gabba and The Mighty B!, Nickelodeon is beginning to embrace the weird again. Apart from Invader Zim and sometimes Spongebob, Nickelodeon became much too safe. In the 90's though, the weirdness of Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, and etc were a big part in what made them so great.
That has nothing to do with this movie though. Looks cool.
piieerrrreeJul 1, 2010
I'm glad for both Nick and The Aquabats that Yo Gabba Gabba! is such a resounding success. I remember hearing about the project in 2008 and thinking it wouldn't go anywhere, then suddenly there were toys at Walmart..
briones07Jun 30, 2010
I was surprised when I saw the tag in the beginning of the trailer

The shirt and paranoia remind me of his character in Fear and Loathing, haha.
jclem1030Jun 30, 2010
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, I think that the character in the car in this trailer is supposed to reference Duke. That's really awesome, even though kids definitely won't understand, haha.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Hell, The posters for Fear and loathing and Rango look similar. Big eyes, stretched and crooked neck, cacti in the background. I wonder if they modeled the lizard from F&L's poster.
johnomazzJun 30, 2010
I dunno, I think its going to be a mediocre movie.
bohnzillaJun 30, 2010
I have a man crush on Johnny Depp.

I'm going to need two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls to truly enjoy this movie

The rest of the voice team is loaded too.
