If you'd watched the linked youtube video of the guy who designed the systems home, you'd see that hydrogen is produced with excess electricity *after* his battery bank is fully charged. His solar panels produce 160% of the energy his home requires. He could either sell it back to the utility company (an option Depp doesn't have), or store it in some other way... IE, hydrogen gas to be used by his fuel-cell during the winter.
