techcrunch.com — Someone on Presidential hopeful John McCain?s staff is going to be in trouble today. They used a well known template to create his Myspace page. The template was designed by NewsVine Founder and CEO Mike Davidson.Davidson gave the template code away to anyone who wanted to use it, but asked that he be given credit when it was used.

Interesting... I wonder if anybody else had this happen to them, not realizing that they were hotlinking an image...

Dammit, wtf is up with my comment disappearing? To recap, I heart McCain (even as a non-partisan, leans to the left Arizonan), but he deserves what he got for hiring an intern who obviously wasn't pro enough to know that hotlinking is one of the top evils of web design (why didn't he hire me instead?!? I would have made all his graphics and design/CSS from scratch!). Also, this is not a hack, it's the good old completely legal and justified switcheroo...and so much fun for people who host their own images (oh the fun I've had!) ;p Bandwidth theft is never cool, especially not when a high profile politician is involved.

Hi, it's Mike D.... perpetrator of this prank. Not sure why I'm finally noticing this Digg thread two weeks after the prank, but two things are amazing to me:1. Something like 40 people felt the need to comment and point out that this wasn't a "hack"... even though to "hack" really just means "to quickly make something perform a duty it wasn't previously performing".2. The Digg commenting system successfully suppressed all but a few of these valueless me-too comments. I was only able to see them when I turned down my threshold. Good job Digg! Also, the McCain prank made the Daily Show. Woohoo!
