Yes, and in those days the way the electoral system worked the VP was essentially the losing candidate. The president and vice president were essentially in opposition of one another. Additionally from what I've read, Adams did not have a great many friends - even among his own party. I've read him described by more than one historian as kind of an intemperate whiner, actually.
