Region encoding does not matter for games. PS1 CDs had no such encoding, and yet they were blocked from being played in systems from other countries by other means. Same goes with cartidge-based systems. You think those cartridges abide by DVD region rules?

"Region encoding makes no sense!"Region coding was original there to thwart piracy. People would get a DVD in china way before it's release come home/have the DVD shipped to them, and it wouldn't work in their player. But, it's useless now because all of the piracy people do region free DVDs now. So basically there isn't a big point to it anymore.

Good, that'll make importing a lot better.

"The differences in analog TV standards used to prevent this in the past."Huh? The reason we have different TV standards is fluke.

This is interesting and I do like my anime. But I wonder what harm may come to the movie industry. As much as consumers don't like regions, taking them away could do more harm than good. Imagine you're a studio who's just finished filming a movie. Having a world wide theatrical release would be very expensive, so you keep it in your own country at first, then when you get the film back from those theatres and you have some money coming in, you send it to other countries. Meanwhile in your home country you start releasing it on DVD. Without region coding your movie would be on store shelves in some countries before it even hits the theatres. Thus you lose out on the money from those theatre goers.

Still doesn't make me want to buy into blu-ray. In the same region or not its not a big deal. You don't think someone will crack the region code or even make a region free player? All this back and forth between blu-ray and hddvd just make me want to stick with DVDs. I guess its too much to ask to have something that's not full of region coding and DRM crap...
