they do have their own version of freenet, by the way. it's so underground that it sorta rivals BT and FN. It's kinda cool. The guy that started it was thrown in jail and never heard from again.With the files on there, I can sorta understand why. No way to trace, no way to index. You just have to know where to look. But it's there... a true undernet.

Umm, they don't censor it, they deny it. There is a huge difference, if their government went around killing people and throwing them into political prisons for that, then it would be different.

My guess is that not about research, just national pride. European countries are doing this kinda crap all the time, funding reseach to prove they are as good or better then the US. This tends to happen alot when research is directed by the government instead of the private sector, priorities become a function of publicity and nationalism instead of common sense.

Internet 2 has been around for long time. It's a high speed network backbone for research institutions (universities, etc.). It uses the standard IP protocols (TCP, UDP) to transfer data around. It was never meant as a start to replace TCP/IP. It was meant to make sure that research institutions got enough bandwidth to continue with their work.
