Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G was the best selling game in Japan last year. That would make your statement a contradiction. While the game is portable, and it is very pick-up-and-play friendly, it's also not at all "casual" if by "casual" you mean "easy".Then again, I'd like to see any player of those aforementioned FPS games last more than 30 seconds against a Yian Garuga or a Rajang or a Narugakuruga. Smart money says they would find out very quickly how not-hardcore they really are.
Many people on this side of the pond wouldn't like the anime feel to the game -- maybe too used to Final Fantasy-esque graphics -- but the voice acting and strength of the script in Tales of Vesperia sold me despite my never having played earlier games in the series.
Tales of Vesperia was the RPG of the year last year for me, as I said on my video game podcast Checkmate Arcade, just slightly over Lost Odyssey and Valkyria Chronicles. Fable 2 and Fallout 3 get knocked down a notch for lots of bugs.
