articles.sfgate.com— If Jamie Oliver can't persuade the school lunch ladies of Huntington, West Virginia, that fresh food is better than processed, maybe he'll have better luck with President Barack Obama.

No one is stopping you from your McDonalds, jjason1985. If you want to eat it, fine. Education is not the same thing as control. The only thing we would be taking about controlling is the already federally controlled school lunch program. They are already tightly controlled, but for the detriment of the children's health. We already control the food, so why not make it a healthier food, since the taxpayers are paying for it and the children are suffering for it? If you want you kids eating pizza every day, pack their lunches and send them off to school with it. No one is stopping that. And if you want to sit and watch TV with a tub of lard as a snack, no one is trying to stop you.
Its not the cheapest because of economies of scale alone. That is only a small part of why it is so cheap. The main reason is because the enriched grains that are used to make processed foods are ultimately subsidized by the government through farmer incentives. This was an initiative that started in the 70's to try and promote foods with less saturated fats. Unfortunately, hindsight reveals how bad of a move this was.
Improvement of our eating habits can result in healthier people. That's a no-brainer. I think it was a bad idea to remove Home Ec classes in my high school & jr. high when I was growing up as many of us could have benefitted from this education. Since my mom worked, iI began to cook for the family when I was 12 years. It was overwhelming to learn by fire in this manner & I hated it. But with my own child, I'm relearning how to cook & providing my child cooking lessons so she'll hopefully, enjoy it and not dread the dinner hour as I did.
Seriously, you honestly think all food is just as healthy as anything else? I'm assuming thats not what you were trying to say, because you sound like a rational person. Are you just a 12 year old troll? If you had watched the show, you would understand that in the schools this was filmed, ALL (or close to it) the kids eat school food.I assume you have heard of the food pyramid. According to the perfectly reasonable guildlines that say what the school has to serve, there has to be X servings of vegetables. French fries were the freakin vegetable. If you honestly think that french fries and potatoes/corn/peas/carrots are equally healthy, you are a f**king moron. If you think it does not matter what the kids eat, look at the how many kids, who eat this unhealthy had diabetes at this young age. The kid on the show (probably a worst case, but still shows what can happen) was 4-5 months from having diabetes and dieing at 35. Pizza for breakfast becasue it has cheese and bread etc...This s**t is dramatically lowering their life expectancy. Your exact attitude, for whatever reason you have it, is EXACTLY why there are so mane fat and obese people in the US. Thats perfectly fine when you can make that decision for yourself. But when your kids are basically forced to eat this s**t, or nothing, it has adverse effects. When they are too young to know any better, you are pushing your extremely unhealthy lifestyle on someone else who does not yet know any better.

In this instance, I would be glad for our nation's ridiculous military might. Maybe for a change it could be used to help.
