g234, he was a hero for his family. After 7 days of no rescue, he tried to go out and find help. Something apparently went wrong and he got lost. The only way the family of Kim's got rescued was on a faint cell signal from a long distance, basically they got lucky. James did what was right, and even with what happened to him, if I was brave enough I would've done the same thing given the situation.

Lets take action now to prevent this from happening again!A a free survival guide wiki has been created,in remembrance of James Kim, with the goal of becoming a condensed, free, 20 page printable emergency survival guide you could just throw into your glove compartment. Simple knowledge like what fauna is edible would have saved James Kim's life. He wouldn't have had to watch his kids go as hungry and may have been able to stay longer.Thousands of Americans die of exposure every year. If this project saves a few lives, it would be worth it. Please help compile this guys. Its a worthy effort to help increase the chances of survival.http://survivalguide.wetpaint.com

"dzgm said: Someone said:"dzgm - That "someone" is me, gfair, and it is 100% truthful."But remember, he was out with his family on a vacation. Not a trip into the wilderness."This is a meaningless statement. What you are saying is: "they didn't plan for something to go wrong". I think you will see the flaw in that point. Scratch that one off the list."Put yourself in his shoes for a second"Do you mean to say that I haven't been in his shoes? Think again dude. A tip for you: never make assumptions about people that you don't know."Needless to say, panic impairs judgment."Next to warmth and shelter, one of the most important issues covered in wilderness survival education is panic and how to cope with it. Again, if Mr. Kim had wilderness survival knowledge, even basic knowledge, he would have been far better able to cope with the panic because he would have had proven life-saving activities he could have focussed on.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/06/earlyshow/contributors/tracysmith/main2233860.shtmlI highly recommend that you, dzgm, look into wilderness survival tips. Your assumptions and claims demonstrate a lack of knowledge on the subject - I urge you to look into it. It may save your life, or the life of people you know, some day.

To all my GreatFriends,Over my 20 plus years of law enforcement and executive protection I have had the distinct honor of meeting and losing outstanding individuals. Heroes! James Kim's selfless acts and brute strength/determination to save his family rank him among one of the finest heroes I have ever met. On two occasions I had the privilege of meeting James Kim in San Francisco. I hold those two meetings close to my heart. When I saw him and his family appear in front of me on the evening news. I was devastated and at the same time hopeful that the outcome would have turned out even more favorable than it did. I know James Kim can rest at ease knowing that his efforts were not in vain and led to the saving of his family. For that he is a true inspiration and hero. With heroes I have lost in the line of duty over many years, I take solace in the fact that I learn something to make myself and others safer in this dangerous world. Without a doubt, the lessons I have learned from James Kim's unfortunate turn of fate will help me and others in the future.Yesterday I got online and read an article on information/equipment needed to survive if stranded in the wilderness. I ordered numerous affordable survival items along with a small duffel bag to keep in my vehicle. I call it my "Kim" pack.Thank you James! "My thoughts are with the Kim family and close friends during the sadness of the recent painful events and the joyful remembrance of past fondness."Your Friend,MikeWeb: myspace.com/michael999

They did find his cell phone. That's how they tracked down the region where the family was. This should be a lesson to everyone. The news article linked says "for all our technology, we couldn't find them quickly enough". Forget technology. When you get stranded in the wilderness, you need to rely on yourself to survive, you never rely on a cellphone, it won't keep you warm, light a fire, or flash a helicopter. You need knowledge and survival equipment, or knowledge how to create your own survival equipment. You need a survival kit in your vehicle, it should be kept there at all times. You need to know wilderness survival tips and have a printout of them in your car, should you get in trouble. You need to know the most important tip that Mr. Kim didn't know: stay in one location, in his case the car. Mr. Kim was found less than a half mile from the car, his 9 mile path took him in a loop. Had he got back to the car, even suffering from exposure and hypothermia, his survival chances would have increased. Had he never left the car, he would never have been exposed to the risks he faced. What's more: the road they went down and got stranded on SHOULD have been blocked off, there was a gate at its entrance that can be closed if there was severe weather. YOUNG PUNKS OPENED THE GATE. (That mentioned on CNN here: http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/08/missing.family.ap/index.html)The bad apple ruins the bunch, but some times it's too much. Damn f'in idiot kids opened the gate, which allowed the series of events leading up to Mr. Kim's death to occur. May they be cursed with a life-long memory of their foolish vandalism.

It's sad that James Kim died but you guys are all just as stupid as he is if you try to make a hero out of him. First off, the guy couldn't read a map and missed his turn. Then he goes down a back road and passes several warning signs that the road is dangerous. Then he turns the wrong way at a sign indicating the way to the coast. Then he sits there for a week, waiting for what? The road is unused in winter. Who's going to come by to help? Sitting put as many have advised, will simply not work in this situation. It would be obvious that you might not see another car for months. He never told anyone his exact route so who would be expected to come looking. He also parked the car on a high spot supposedly to be seen by his supposed rescuers but this is going to be where it is coldest. The only way way that I could see out of the situation would be to first try and get a cell phone signal at a high spot. Barring that, I would make sure the family is safe in the car, then venture up and down all three roads of the intersection for a few miles each. That would have found the lodge. If this didn't work, the only way out would be to dress as warmly as possible. Then walk out as quickly as possible to the nearest help. You'd have to do this within a day while you still have lots of strength. Make sure the family is safe and warm as possible. Bring a map with you and keep an eye on your general direction to avoid going in circles. Take a cell phone with you and keep trying to get a signal as you walk. Stay on the road, don't venture off into the woods. Mark each intersection where you came from by breaking saplings etc. Keep walking without stopping. At the average walking speed of 4 miles an hour you should be able to cover 50 to 100 miles in 24 hours. That would easily bring you to some help.If he would have done anything like that then he would have been a hero. If you don't agree, go to www.darwinawards.com and you'll find many more heros to your taste.

Wow, that's a true father what love for his kids and wife to leave into such harsh terrain in search of help. I think everyone of us hope that our parents would do the same thing for us and hope that we could be that brave if the time called for it in our lives.Rest in Peace - James

This was one brave man. I wish others would learn to appreciate this man's dedication and devotion to others. His death is testimony to his unselfishness and willingness to place others above his own self. Sucks that he died. As a Muslim, I pray that his family be given the patience needed to pass through this ordeal and that Allah (God) give them the strength they need. You know, things like this help people to overcome their differences and come together on "real" issues like human nature and emotions. I don't know man, I just feel for this guy and his family.-- Karim Baz
