sfgate.com — "It was a very moving, and very noble story," said Mitch Gelman, senior vice president and executive producer of CNN.com. "And ultimately, very sad." Making the story more dramatic was how viewers and readers hoping for the family to be reunited clung to each new development online

possibly mis-reported...that page only says "the story had received 1 million page views on MSNBC.com, making it their top-rated story". And the previous context was related to Wednesday....I don't think this makes it an all time record. But maybe.

Summary: 1. Rich CNET executive editor takes a winter sabbatical to go on a long road trip visiting friends and family in his SAAB station wagon.2. He makes a very poor decision to take a mountain pass road that is not traveled in winter. He makes the attempt at 8:30pm. He gets near the top of the mountain when it starts to rain and then snow. He had to stop the car several times to move large rocks out of the road. He decides that this is a bad idea and turns around. He does not go back the exact same way and turns off the main road. Perhaps he missed a turn due to the snow fall. He stops the car and decides to wait till morning. When he and his family wake up the snow is at least two feet deep and no chance of a snow plow coming along.3. Mr. Kim, his wife, and two young children manage to stay warm by running the car engine. When the gas runs out, they burn all 5 tires to keep warm and to also use as a signal (black smoke). 4. They were stranded for 7 days when Mr. Kim decides to take some snow shoes and try to hike out for help. The wife is breast feeding the children and neither parent has eaten. Two days later a helicopter (paid for by Mr. Kim's family) finds the wife and child and air drops some survival food that includes chocolate and Gator Aide. 5. A day or two later they find Mr. Kim's body. This tragic series of events happens all too often in rugged terrain all over the USA and Canada. There are always road signs making serious statements like "Road Frequently Closed due to snow drifts", "Bring enough water and food for 5 days", "State Trooper or Mounted Police make 3 day rotations" or some other important information. Those who don't heed these signs may be seriously injured or killed. There was that bear lover who camped out next to Grisley bears all the time. The park rangers would ask him to carry a large caliber gun or at the very least bear repellent (MACE). He didn't and he and his wife were found mauled to death and half eaten.

So many Diggers here remind me of high school kids morning the classmate who died yet they hardly knew and wouldn't speak to when they were alive. Suddenly the death becomes a life changing event for them. But in reality they feel no loss, the morning process becomes a social one. Be honest people. How many of you Diggers could have identified who James Kim was, what he did or who he worked for prior to this news event? This is classic Digg groupthink.

You're missing my point all together. The story is about how msnbc.com had record page views for this story, and the comments on this post had people complaining about how many James Kim stories made it to the front page of digg.com (Under the Tech Industry News topic). People watching the tech industry news topic are familiar with technology, and familiar with James Kim. Therefore, if someone that you are aware of, or have been watching for years on TV, and Vidcasts, or listenting to on podcasts dies, it will peak your interest more than if it is someone you don't know or never heard of dies. This is not to take away from the other people that die every day. If you want to, you can post stories that you see about tragedies and death to digg (world news topic). Since James was big in the tech community, that is why there are so many posts here.
