blackbookmag.com — Stanton A. Glantz of the Smoke Free Movies Initiative announced he’d soon be mounting an informational campaign to counter what he perceives as the film’s pro-smoking message. What does James Cameron think of all this? He very nicely and patiently calls bullsh*t.

I don't have enough charisma for that gear.

I'm not just saying this because I'm an anti-smoker, but does it make sense, with current trends, for smoking as we know it to exist that far in the future?

You totally missed the point of that cigarette in The Fifth Element. The character was trying to quit. The machine would give him less tobacco and more filter everyday.

@bob - It's a disgusting habit, period. I'm also not telling people who currently smoke not to do it - simply relaying to those that have never smoked how disgusting of a habit it is, how much better I feel no longer smoking, and how much cleaner everything is as a result of not participating in that activity.I was never annoyed when people told me they didn't like the fact that I smoked. It's a horrible habit that sticks to you, your clothing, and your body. Really, if you and the other pansies in this thread are so emotionally scarred by someone telling them to quit smoking - then perhaps they shouldn't do it.

@hivoltage: at which point have I indicated that this was a big problem to me?Never. That's when. That's why I find your idea that I'm "compromising" absurd, because my position is the same as when I first commented on this issue: it is a minor annoyance, one that does not take away from a spectacular film, but (in my opinion) a flaw in the script nonetheless. The fact that my position is unpopular has no bearing on how valid it is, and frankly I don't care if I convinced anyone or not. It mildly annoyed *me*, and that's all that counts. If you don't like it, tough luck.In case you didn't notice, ScottyAnimal and I managed to have a civil discussion about this. Your condescending attitude is unwarranted. Don't act as if you know anything about me, because you don't know s**t.I never claimed to be an expert about screenwriting, but I *did* read a lot of them. I studied film production and wrote a couple of (never produced) scripts, and read as many as I could during that period in my life.Right now I am writing dialogues for non-interactive cut scenes in a console game due in the spring of 2011 (using film script format, as it happens). How many scripts have you read/written?Ugh. I should know better than to argue with fanboys...at least ScottyAnimal managed to be reasonable!

@JBizness: you are right, I didn't read the article, but that doesn't change anything. I got that the character was a jerk just by the way she talked to the protagonist (as well as her body language). The cigarette smoking was unnecessary (and not even that effective) to portray her that way.Secondly, while I do agree it's interesting that the character has more respect for her avatar than her own body, I really didn't get that from viewing the film. Either they should have made that more consistent, or just dropped it. It's also unclear how dangerous smoking would really be in a future where they can give you new legs, making her self-destructive ways less significant...

Why don't they want to ban fat people from movies too?
frankyfan3Jan 7, 2010
This was also considered, but I couldn't help my knee-jerk skepticism, only subdue it.

No, no, no. He meant a cigarette that's been laced with E.

Oh man, that's the worst kind!
