Actually he was already id'd, he was a doctor. I dont remember who the prime suspect was I forget, but he was a educated man. THe autorities didnt want to say anything about it because he was in the upper class. It would tant the image of the educated. Because we all know, educated people dont commit crimes. *sarcasm*Thats what british society was like back then, in some ways its still like that, but not nearly as arrogant. Plus the fact the lower class has grown quite big, and not so low. its merged into the middle class, and the upper class is starting to merge into the middle. Its quite interesting if you think about it.
I think it would be good to know who he was just to put the mystery to rest. The painter, the aristocrat, the doctor... Just to know who's DNA it is. The trick will be to sample enough items and get a clear enough DNA profile.
Seriously what about the Zodiac killer from San Francisco in the sixties? I did a research paper about him and he never was caught but he did kill a lot of people and blatantly made fun of the cops or piggies as he called them I think.
That is a pointless investigation. Why would they want to know. What are they going to do have the victim's families and Jack's family(if he had one) meet or something? It's cool technology but it just seems like a dumb idea and probably a big waste of money.
They're doing it precisely because there IS MONEY in it. People are interested in it. These unsolved murders are interesting and solving them with DNA evidence will make some people pretty rich; authors etc.

If you ask me, the case was all ready solved by an author of all people. The book is called "Portrait of a Killer". The only thing she couldn't confirm when she wrote the book was the DNA evidence, because they refused to run the tests on it at the time. Its a good book. In it, she includes some of the "art" of the suspected serial killer, as well as handwriting samples, etc. This woman solved the case. Not some scientist doing now, what she ASKED them to do years ago.The book:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0399149325/104-5721639-4403146?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance

I always wondered if London's Jack the Ripper was the same guy as the one in Austin who did similar things earlier in that time... http://www.casebook.org/dissertations/dst-austin.html
