HD radio crowds out the sidebands of other legitimate channels. The lobby for HD by conglomerates like Clearchannel has just helped corporate radio gain more of a stranglehold on advertising markets by requiring more space on the spectrum. Local small time broadcasters will be crowded out. Sideband frequencies that were meant to ensure non interference will not be filled with HD signal at the blessing of the FCC. They'll have all the authority in the world to reevaluate some licenses or choose not to renew them in order to make this HD thing work. Most likely this will be done with selective nods from big radio.
i just had a rental car for a week that didn't have satellite radio. i drove around all week with the radio off. that was better programming then that shiat they call "free" radio. it's not free if you're not enjoying it.
incidently both AM stereo and HD are in some receivers the Accurian receiver sold at RadioShack with the date code 09A06 or later has AM stereo reception as well as HD also FM stereo too another one made by Sangean has AM stereo too but the Accurian does the better job at getting analog AM stereo the Sangean has a weirdness that prevents the analog AM stereo from being decoded correctly it is because of the decoder AM stereo is sent as L+R on a quadrature modulated channel and also a PM component the Sangean does not convert the L+R signal into an L-R signal as the Accurian HD receiver and earlier AM stereo receivers do too bad the FCC could not decide on a standard early which is what killed AM stereo in the first place I once heard it said that if the FCC of the 1950's was run like the FCC of the 1980's we would still be watching black and white TV.
Although I agree with your refusal of HD radio, there is a strong reason why FM is used today-the quality of sound! I only listen to AM modulated sound on shortwave for internationalnews stations (when I'm not at the computer).Furthermore I think transmitting on MW (technical term for the "AM band") is a waste of power compared to shortwave. But I've seen a much bigger waste of power: the Taldom LW transmitter in Russia transmits 2.5 MEGAWATTS(!!) and only reaches some parts of Europe.
HD or Standard, broadcasting won't get better until conglomerates like Clear Channel and Cox Communications are destroyed and smaller markets are allowed to broadcast.f**k CLEAR CHANNEL!!

so by putting "HD" in front of the name and actually lowering the quality is a way to persuade the sheep that it is better?
