I agree with this, to a point.I'm not sure about completely legalizing all drugs, but definitely the less harmful ones (I'm not an expert) like marijuana. And legalize the rest, while regulating safety standards.Part of the reason they were deemed illegal back in the early 1900s is because they were killing (marijuana wasn't, I know) so many people. If you legalized heroin, cocaine, etc. I'd think maybe do it like they do in Amsterdam? (IIRC) and have like government approved health standards and shops where you can go to pay for it, make sure it's a safe dosage, have your own little room, chill out, and then leave. Something along those lines. That should at least prevent the majority of the crime and spending on the war on drugs. Also take part of the money made from legalizing the drugs to promote drug awareness and dangers. Also part of that money could go to treatment and helping people get rid of their addictions, if they wanted it, not forced.

I can see that a few of you need a refresher course in basic Logic. It doesn't really matter how many more deaths Alcohol causes. That's completely irrelevant. It also causes more deaths per year than say, "submersion in a vat of hydrochloric acid", but that doesn't mean it's "more dangerous". The relevant statistic is the death percentage of each specific group.

@aronNeither the state or federal government can just ignore the other's rights, so it's impossible for the state governments to take control of drug laws. Technically I guess it makes sense, since each state has a different culture, but the fact is that the federal government under the commerce clause is responsible for regulating drugs, just like it's responsible for printing money. Unless you want to propose a Constitutional amendment, I don't see states taking control of drug policy. As for your other points, the use of drugs is definitely an issue. How would you like heroin being advertised to your kids, because that's the 'personal freedom' you're defending. The whole idea behind making drugs illegal is to insulate society from them, and while 'people do it anyway', using heroin is in my experience something that most normal people tend not to condone. Why is it that more people drink alcohol than snort cocaine? Personally, I feel like legalization sends a message to society that doing X is socially acceptable. I don't want heroin or meth use to become socially acceptable, because I don't want to live in a nation filled with drug addicts.

I don't buy ****ry's scenario. People used opiates at the turn of the century often under directions from their doctors. The doctors prescribed these substances because they were the best product for the job at that time. Today we have more specialized pharmaceuticals that are arguably safer. People who know how dangerous heroin can be are not going to go out and get addicted to the stuff just because it's legal to do so. I'll admit, people can be dumb, but not that dumb. Further, those who used these substances to ward off demons, or for flavoring cereal or for any other ridiculous reason, were just ignorant. Ignorance is combated with information. Today, people are better informed and will make better decisions with the knowledge they possess. The money saved from not locking people up could help offset the cost of methadone. I'm sure those people who use heroin today will continue using it if it could be obtained legally, but more importantly, (this is pure conjecture) I foresee reduced heroin use going forward if there were safer alternatives readily available. As well, the lack of "pushers" would help to reduce the number of new heroin users. Combine this with an information/education campaign and I foresee reduced usage of all the more dangerous drugs.

If you want the government in place to take care of health care, this same government will do things you don't like such as prohibiting pot and killing random brown people in the middle east. It's time to try something new. We can't trust these guys. They always disappoint.

First of all, you shouldn't do drugs on the job. But I do have an anecdotal experience here.Friend of mine is an electrician too. I had him put in a new panel for me on a Saturday, after we smoked a few fatties. Ill let you know when my house burns down.

Absolutely legalize and tax pot. Quadruple the price of cigarettes. Gov't health care for all Americans. Support union labor. prosecute Bush and Cheney for war crimes, and prosecute dirty cops. That's a good start.

I got you beat...about 10 years ago, I got my $100 stolen from me by a NARCOTICS UNDERCOVER OFFICER in Newark, N.J. It was on Mother's Day, no less. I just tried to look at it like I was paying bail without the middleman...
