No, corn syrup is simply much cheaper. Remember sugar is not subsidized by the government, corn syrup is because of corn subsidies. Even if they make 1 penny more per can, it adds up when you are cranking about a few billion cans per year. They are willing to sacrifice taste on the altar of money, and since its laden with caffeine, they have an addicted consumer.
You would be shocked how advertisers used to sell stuff to the public. They sold us tapeworms, radioactive water, prostate warmers that plugged into 110v current sockets, cigarettes promoted by doctors, cocaine cough drops, heroin toothache reliever, electrick belts, and leaded gasoline.
