uninnovate.com — The Library of Congress (who knew they were in charge of this) issued a new rule in 2006 making it legal to unlock cell phones for the "purpose of lawfully connecting to a wireless telephone communication network." Looks like using the iPhone with T-Mobile may not be a problem after all. Why haven't there been more stories about this?

No kidding. I have had an unlocked phone through T-Mobile for 2 years. It is my greatest phone. It is not hard to buy and they don't want to tell you since it means less profits in the company's pocket.

No s**t, Dick Tracy, this has been out there since, well, November. Congrats to all of you for finally finding it.

I'm sure this was dugg last year. But one of the more prominent wireless websites covered it without any hoopla. <a class="user" href="http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1974">http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1974</a>I work for Cingular and never saw any type of communication regarding this announcement. Apparently no one cares.ninja edit: engadgetmobile too!<a class="user" href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/11/23/copyright-office-rules-that-consumers-can-legally-unlock-cellpho/">http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/11/23/copyright-office-rules-that-consumers-can-legally-unlock-cellpho/</a>

Do you have ANY idea what you are talking about? "Locking" a phone has nothing to do with theft.

Like, I mentioned below, I just bought an unlocked Cingular-branded 8525 from <a class="user" href="http://www.sugarpipe.com">http://www.sugarpipe.com</a> which means that unlocking was not only done on a consumer level, but at a retail level.

I don't get what's so special about iPhone's visual voice mail. Don't cell phone already allow random access to your voice mail box? If not, what the hell are they currently doing? (Please excuse my ignorance... I'm not a cell phone user).

I had no problem getting unlocking codes from T-Mobile for my Motorola RAZR. They emailed them to me with in 48 hours. I believe you have to have had the phone with them for 90 days before they will give you the code. Now when I travel to Brazil, I jusy buy a SIM card there and use local service - it's much cheaper that way!

We have a website where we advertise for local businesses who unlock and reprogram cell phones. Now that it is legal it is a great way to get more customers in your door if you operate a wireless store. Check it out! <a class="user" href="http://www.unlocktotalk.com">http://www.unlocktotalk.com</a>

The author of clause has mentioned and has opened excellent and a vital topic presently. Clause is written interestingly and the main thing actual. The same theme on Russian sites: <a class="user" href="http://pivo.in.ua">http://pivo.in.ua</a> <a class="user" href="http://www.alcogol.kiev.ua">http://www.alcogol.kiev.ua</a>

As far as I've heard, in order to use the visual voice mail features of the iPhone, you will absolutely have to be on the Cingular network. If you don't care about that feature, and www.Gsmliberty.net or www.iUnlock.com somehow manage to offer support for unlocking the iPhone, then you should be able to simply slip your SIM card into it and use whatever network you want. <a class="user" href="http://www.rolid.org">http://www.rolid.org</a> <a class="user" href="http://www.se-ua.com">http://www.se-ua.com</a>

Apparently, we’ve been able to do a little legal hacking, distribute copyrighted material, and circumvent a whole slew of methods designed to “keep us out” for a little while now. And all because of some changes to rules concerning anitcircumvention that the Library of Congress felt it necessary to amend. <a class="user" href="http://www.homephoneservices.co.uk">http://www.homephoneservices.co.uk</a>
