cnn.com— "Gifted" has become one of the most tossed-about words in the parenting lexicon. Unfortunately -- sorry, but let's get this out of the way right up front -- it's also one of the most misused.

As previously mentioned in this comment section, the new definition of giftedness is 120sd15, in other words... the top 10%.Yes, 120 is bright... but not in any way near the accepted cut-off for intellectual giftedness, 130. It's just another step towards telling children they're all special, which is complete bulls**t.Poor little buggers. We wouldn't want to hurt their feelings by showing them what the world is really like, eh?
The thing is it's NOT common sense. Do you know how many parents spank their kids? Do you know how many use formula? (It's still sold isn't it? it's still a billion dollar industry isn't it?) What's common sense to you isn't common sense to everyone. And your blanket statement "train them to be street smart". How do you even do that? Some parents just leave their kid at home when they're 5 and say that's training them to be street smart. Others lock em in their house til they're 18 and tell them to take home ec and wood shop in school and say they're street smart. People do not have common sense.I agree with you about the rest though. There's a lot of stupid information in most of these books. Some are important though. (teaching a kid a 2nd language. That should be done much earlier than anyone in the US is doing.)
