Robert Laughlin's book "A Different Universe: Reinventing Physics from the Bottom Down," is a real gem, if you're interested in thinking outside the box. First guy quoted in the article.
Ok folk, now you know that they are just making s**t up. herbertsmithite? Come on. If you really believe this s**t, then really are a sucker. These guys have run out of real ideas and now they are coming up with s**t in order to justify grant money.
Only one previous comment in this thread was a serious commentary on the story. Shame on you diggers. The fact that Maxwell's equations are distilled out of this theory is one of the most important pieces of information from the article, and no one said anything about it. This is pretty fundamental and new science, it has testable hypotheses, and is worthy of further scrutiny. If you are commenting in the science section, try to be appropriately skeptical yet cogent in you commentary.Yes, I get the "Herbert, Herbert" from the space hippie episode of Star Trek (TOS).
This article proves that science education sucks. Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma. I am currently in a high school chemistry class where the teacher refuses to talk about plasma. This will make a nice current event for class tomorrow, not on a fourth state of matter, but for the fact that the world has no idea plasma exists.
