gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com— YouTube's Safety Mode filter, which is intended to filter out violence and other material inappropriate for children, has been available since February. How well does it work?

Seriously? If parents are afraid of their kids seeing stuff that isn't G Rated then they should throw out the computer. Safety filters are never going to work unless someone at youtube screened every second of every uploaded video.
As a casual observer, I'd say the YouTube filter mechanism is pretty effective for what it is -- likely spot checking -- instead of, in the words of another poster, painstakingly "screening every second of every uploaded video".
What bugs me is when you try to post a Youtube video on your Facebook page which is deemed to be inappropriate for children, Youtube filters out out the thumbnail and even the title of the video. So annoying, especially when all of your friends are over 18, anyways!
Again. a writer who doesn't understand much of how the Internet works and the scale of problems faced in the sort of thing being suggested - screening each and every video.

" How well does it work?" Before reading the story, for some reason I'd have to guess.... not very.

Yeah, cuz most kids on the internet don't know how to (a) lie about their age or (b) disable/bypass the filtering completely.
