nytimes.com — For many decades now, the big four broadcast TV networks have all had the same business plan. But that model, based on attracting enough ad dollars to cover the costs of shows like Lost and ER, no longer appears viable. TV network executives are scrambling for ways to diversify revenue streams in a time when Hulu and Youtube seem to be thriving.

It's just another example of a form of media failing to adapt. They cancel good shows based on an antiquated rating system and continue to produce shows no one watches because it's cheap (or because someone subsidized it like I assume Ford did for Knight Rider).

I was doing a internet search last night on actors and video games. I watched a show with that actor in it on you tube and found the video game documentary I came across on google video just by doing a simple search, try that on T.V.

Yeah that's fine, but I just think it seems quite logical why you believe so strongly in it.As someone who likes it, it makes sense that you find it difficult to fathom the other side of the fence, i.e. those of us who are growing weary of it etc. Hey TV was a pretty major thing and part of our lives one way of the other, it's had a huge social influence and is a powerful technology. But lately it's becoming obsolete in it's original form IMO.The problem is the old advertisement break formula IMO. Pay-per-view is GREAT I'll use that sometimes, I'm happy to pay for convenience. What I don't want AT ALL is advertisements, and I can by-pass them now through different media sources or clever use of DVR (Tivo or similar), or just do something other than TV. It needs an opt-out mode for advertisements in order to survive. I would happily pay an additional subscription charge for zero ad TV, and I believe a lot of other people would also.Hey I'm all for the arts, entertainment, creativity and great variety of choice, it's just I'd rather spend more time enjoying the actual art than being patronised by some stupid commercial I have zero interest in.Infact a good rule of thumb I use is, if they have to advertise the product on TV, then it is probably deficient or crap, a good products credentials will spread naturally by word of mouth. You don't see TV ads for porsche for a reason.Regards
