theregister.com — With senior executives offering the Wall Street Journal's Rob Guth an account of why Windows Vista will arrive so late and so incomplete. Thanks to the co-operation of Amitabh Srivastava, Brian Valentine, product manager Jim Allchin and even Gates himself - the Longhorn death march is turned into - wouldn't you know? - a triumph.

microsoft is in real trouble. it's possible for them to really come through, though. if they manage to make sure that when vista is released, it's released on time, and only contains such minor little bugs that most people wouldn't notice immediately. their "good enough" releases and constantly pushing back deadlines kills everyone's expectations and confidence in the OS, historically the most devastating effect on inital sales.starting with beta 2 (this november), the betas (as far as i've heard) will be available for public testing, with a new build every month. a brilliant tactical maneuver on the part of microsoft, this lends desperately needed aid in areas of major concern. on the surface, it's a brilliant (and free) method of compiling bug reports from literally hundreds of thousands of as many man hours as their previous testing model. also, since the public who will be downloading and testing this will range from geeks to beginners, more "real world" problems and bugs will be exposed since geeks make different mistakes than regular people do. this should help M$ meet that deadline.it's main feature set seems to mirror OSX 10.4 Tiger, and ballmer even admitted it. from the GUI to the data management, it's brought itself into the present by matching at least some of the currently offered technology in tiger, and it will hopefully integrate the missing features in the first service pack (WinFS and some network/server tools). but that's not all for m$. when vista comes out, OSX 10.5 leopard will be debuting to much fanfare and hooplah as the launch os for the new intel macs. all mac ads will have to say is "you have to buy a new computer to upgrade. so, will you choose the company that has never failed to disappoint you, or now for the same price will you choose the company you know to make a higher-quality product?"

This is merely a fanboy puff piece with no actual evidence of any microsoft triumphs. Vista successful... I will believe it when I see it.

Man, the spin machine for Vista is unbelievable.

again, please remind me why i should care about Vista? at least with OS X, apple will give me a happy list of new features, even if some are b.s. MSFT, says "use vista! its secure! clearer! shinier!" and thats it. Seriously, what will it do for me? Search? Google Desktop does that for me, and it learns over time. Gadgets? Y! Widgets! Translucent windows? NEAT! The only way that they will impress me is if they do what apple does, and have each successive OS release be faster than the last.

Even Mini-Microsoft (<a class="user" href="http://http://minimsft.blogspot.com/)">http://http://minimsft.blogspot.com/)</a> has this down as a PR piece. His take: "I saw it briefly as I ate my cereal Friday morning and had to cover my mouth so that I didn't spray my screen. Talk about a fluffer - er, fluff - piece." That sort of says it all.Still, I would like to know how much it costs to have something like that inserted in the WSJ. Or have they deteriorated so far that their "journalist" do this for free just out of their natural bias?

OHmichael: I was not referring to your article as a dupe. I saw that you submitted your story before the dupe story submitted by hypnotoad1, who is well known for duping stories.

I hate how people comment on how they "know" what vista will turn out to be, before its even out of beta 1. You guys must not know very much about computers, or are obviously not working in the industry. Try going to a business and see how many people run OSX....yeah....not too many unless its a graphics studio.Microsoft is a hell of alot smarter than you are, so shutup with the dumb comments and let them make whatever the f**k they want to make. Maybe you should get off your fatass and do something with your life.MS is not dead. Anyone who honestly thinks that is an idiot plain and simple. Anyone whose not at some gay city college can probably understand that when 75% + of the world use windwos....microsoft isnt "dead"f**kin idiots
