agolb.blogspot.com — Linux.org is not the official Linux website, but millions of people believe it is. Is it a nice, modern, exciting page fostering Linux adoption? Hardly so. Even worse, far too many energies seem to be dedicated to raising money in a way that may even hurt the Linux image... I guess you have to turn adblock off for this one.

There is a website which I think deserves everyone's support as the GNU/Linux homepage, at least for those getting introduced to GNU/Linux for the first time (and they are the ones who will have first impressions, most important impressions). Here is it: http://www.getgnulinux.orgI admit I am affiliated with that site (I don't own it, but I cooperate with them), but I really think it deserves attention.Thank youDanijel

"no program competing with Microsoft products, be it multimedia player, web browser, office suite, instant messaging program or other, can come pre-installed on computers you can buy."Oh good Lord, that's bulls**t!

Well, actually I agree. In 1994 linux.org was a quite modern and nice looking website. But it hasn't changed since then!Welcome to the 21st century! For a good layed-out Linux sites visit http://getgnulinux.org or http://polishlinux.orgNot as much information as on linux.org, but not as much ads either and certainly more up-to date content you can find there.

"Are Linux users hurting Linux?""Linux users are the most vocal about their software. Is their claim of a nice, modern, exciting and easily customizable OS helping Linux? Hardly so. Even worse, far too many energies seem to be dedicated to bashing anyone not using Linux in a way that may even hurt the Linux image... I guess you have to turn stupidblock off for this one."

@drag - there are system tool sets other than GNU. Both Solaris and BSD have their own and can run Apache, X, KDE and practically any OSS app without any GNU software. I've seen Linux running with the BSD tool set. In fact it could be said that GNU is entirely optional. Please stop pretending the entire world started with GNU. There were comperable tools in existance before GNU came into existance and there are plenty of free comperable tools now.Everyone appreciates that GNU do a lot of work but they aren't the center of gravity for the entire movement however much people would like to believe it.

Actually it's got a pretty damned good explanation on there."What is Linux?"Linux is a clone of the operating system Unix, written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance."It has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and multistack networking including IPv4 and IPv6.""New to Linux?"If you're new to Linux, you don't want to download the kernel, which is just a component in a working Linux system. Instead, you want what is called a distribution of Linux, which is a complete Linux system. There are numerous distributions available for download on the Internet as well as for purchase from various vendors; some are general-purpose, and some are optimized for specific uses."
