I think, actually, the benefit is not that people are better informed, though they probably are.The real benefit of a show like The Daily Show derives from the kind of comedy that they do. Sure some of it is of the "he has a big nose" or [insert sex joke here] variety, but, as the article points out, a lot of it is actually based on analyzing and critiquing what's going on, and what's being said about what's going on. There's a lot of pointing out hypocrisy or absurd claims, deconstructing doublespeak, and logically analyzing the claims of both sides of an issue. That kind of analysis is actually useful and informative (it's what we try to teach kids to do in school), and if people are given it with a little comedy "sugar" to make it go down more easily, so much the better. And, I think the comedic critical analysis I'm talking about has two positive qualities. First, it presents smart analyses to the audience, giving them good arguments about current events. Second, it models that kind of thinking/analysis and encourages it in the audience, getting them to think that way themselves when they hear other news commentators.
What?? Are you implying there is little to no extortion and abuse of our entitlement systems, you really believe that or are you blind, deaf, totally illiterate, and 17 with no experience in life? I know you are, but feel free to respond liberal.... and no I'm not a republican/democrat, I'm actually ficscally conservative.
The greatest responsibility of the press in a free society is to question and challenge authority. No one does it better than Jon Stewart - a true patriot.
Our Jon Stewart, which art in New York City...hallowed be thy opinion...thy hour come...thy giggles won...in my home as it is in America...give us this day our daily news....and forgive us our disbelievers, as we forgive them that disbelieve against us...lead us not into honest reporting....and deliver us from boredom...for thine is the daily show, and the spinmeisters, and the shills....for ever and ever....Amen.

Rearlgrant -- They have short memories. It's the same reason they forget everything they learned in Civics and History classes.
