They don't have to believe in a god to be sober, but I bet it helps. If you can imagine someone watching you all the time, I bet that makes it easier to not cheat, drink, or what-have-you.The really sad part is thinking that somewhere, sometime, someone said, "hey, you know a great way to convert more people? If the therapy is based on rootless mysteries it is likely to backfire. However, there are people who believe that it is difficult to live without subservience to the unknown power; but they are basically weak, physically and mentally.
Creating a fantasyland in which some supernatural being counts the number of hairs on your head does not help you deal with reality. Facing reality is ultimately what allows someone to break free from addiction.

I can personally attest to this (as apparently can Mr. Cuban). You are quite simply repeating a common myth the religious institutions would like people to believe.
