The last time I used Freenet it was incredibly slow and bare. People had a few anarchy things and it would take 10 minutes to download a couple 500k files. Blech.

Good project, greedy developers."---The guy is trying to work on Freenet as a full-time job. He isn't charging for it, he's simply asking for donations so that he can continue working. Freenet has vastly improved over the years, and I'm sure it wouldn't have made such progress if he only got to write code in his spare time.

Since bittorrent kill the regular Tor network why doesn't someone use Tor technology to create a new tor network specifically for high-volume traffic and integrate it with BitTorrent?

I ran a Freenet node for several years. Through many versions of the software. Fundamentally, it's a cool system, which generated continuously huge levels of traffic from the 1000 peers that my node connected to. It would take a few hours after each upgrade for the node to be reintegrated, but once integration was complete and there wasn't some new bug, the system performed fairly well on my little dedicated 800MHz iBook. I had a 10GB share. It was actually a pleasure watching the traffic and share grow. It was an organic thing.Eventually, it was the fact that my node so successful and I wanted to do other things with that iBook and bandwidth, that caused me to delete it. I'll set it up again when .70 of Freenet ships in January.Hey folks, the risks of getting hit by lightening or winning the lottery are greater than a prosecution for running a Freenet node in the US. No Judge or Prosecutor or Police officer is going to give two seconds thought to Freenet nodes because users can't control it period. And having Freenet installed is not a crime.

The Supremes have nailed down that "free speech" INCLUDES "anonymous speech". Why give away a constitutional right that the Supreme court says is ours. The constitution protects everyone, including the worst of the criminals. The rights to free speech were granted by the FIRST Amendment because it's very very important to everything else that happens in the whole world of political freedoms.Seems kind of silly to argue that "free speech" is only as free as you're willing to fight for, go to jail for or die for.

Freenet Sound good but is not 1) It is really really really slow 2) It has a lot of bad crap on the network like child pornography, how to kill people and not get caught and Terrorist crap so if that stuff is your bag go for it.

Newsgroups all the way. I got a nasty letter from the RIAA because of Bittorrent. Newsgroups have been a fast, safe way to download for me for years.
