A developer would have to be ignorant to support only ALSA directly in a application like this. You could support legacy linux, new linux and freebsd all together by coding it for esd, but they chose to use alsa. Remember, ALSA isn't a Unix package, it's a Linux package.
I see the points. But hey, if they make it work and my little flash applets have sound (the few that i actually want to use with flashblock), then i'm a happy camper. But I could live a very purposeful life without ever seeing another flash applet again, so maybe I'm the wrong guy to consult.

So, he'll give you that a free software flash player is what people want most, but they still won't give us one. I'll wait for Gnash...

hmm, people want to see videos on youtube, google videos, etc, not the ads, not having the player is really limiting the Internet "experience".

@gaspy: Yes, there is. Look at their FAQ about the spec; they explicitly state that they don't want it used to create a player.

Atdig: well, at least both Google Video and youtube are supported. They won't lose the linux audience by going flash 8 or 9. They will wait.

There is flash 7, 'tard. And it's been around for ages.
