niallkennedy.com — If you could ask Bill Gates one question, what would you ask? I spent an hour today with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on the company's Redmond campus. I chose to ask Bill about Microsoft's intellectual property stance against Linux and its open source developers, from the SCO Group's litigation against IBM to Steve Ballmer's recent claim.

Yeah I don't know why he didn't type that up in Word and host in on Google's servers from his gmail account.

It's interesting that he doesn't cite an any instances where the Linux community stole intellectual property. I heard, and this may not be true, that Win2K was based on the Linux kernel. Each person should use the OS they're more comfortable with. I prefer Linux, but I know enough about it to work with it. I've only seen a couple distributions so far that make it easier to use, Ubuntu and LinuxXP. The main problem still remains. Most people don't want to have the skills of a system administrator. The software developers in the Linux community need to realize this, and so do many Linux fans. I hate seeing the Linux experts respond to questions with,"RTFM". These same fans that answer "RTFM" are usually the same ones hoping Linux really catches on in popularity. The answer to the original question actually involves a great deal of command line garbage that not everybody wants to know. Sure, it's good knowledge, but many people want to install software the same way they would in Windows.I like Windows for its ease of use. I hate it for its instability and SERIOUS security flaws.I like Linux for its stability and secure nature. I hate how difficult it can be sometimes to install software and resolve dependencies. We could have a kick-ass OS if we combined the best features of both! It's too bad there is a great deal of stubborness on both sides.

win2k was NOT based off of Linux. However, it was HEAVILY influenced by the VMS guys when Microsoft bought out Digital's software team (though a few left for Microsoft before Digital colapsed). Its a well documented point in history so I am not going to bother digging up links unless people really want it.Now VMS guys were heavily influenced by Unix and BSD so I guess a correlation can be made that win2k is based off of Unix...but thats kinda of a stretch because every OS was influenced by Unix anyway (props to Ken Thompson!)...In fact it was a bunch of guys from the old VMS team that made 64bit possible for Microsoft (VMS had 64bit back in the 80's). Check out information on David Cutler. He left VMS and is now heading up the development for Microsoft on 64bit OS.(BTW, I am a huge fan of Digital. I /still/ have Digital servers running and the Uni that I graduated from /still/ has Alpha servers up and running. They were an excelent company and now the name is nothing more then low end HP servers :-'( ).
